Where Metatron represents the archetype of the Divine Masculine, the Holy Spirit represents the archetype of the Divine Feminine. If one used the analogy of a pipe, Metatron would represent the pipe - structure, matter and form, whereas the Holy Spirit would represent all that flows through and around the pipe - fluidity, grace, intuition, creativity....
Historically, the ‘Holy Spirit’ comes from the Judaic tradition, later being adopted by both Muslims and Christians, with significantly different interpretations. In its original form, Holy Spirit (Ruach Adonai, Ruach El, etc.) was a feminine noun. The divine presence of God, the Shekhinah, was also feminine, but considered to be different from the Holy Spirit. When the Church found itself facing strong opposition from the beliefs of the Mother Goddess that were prevalent in many parts of Europe, the Holy Spirit became the masculine part of the Divinity. Woman, after all, had caused ‘the fall’ and could not be worthy of being part of the Godhead. Until that point, women had played equal roles to men in politics and religion all over Europe. With the spread of Christianity, the feminine was suppressed. In Islam, the ‘Created Spirit’, is also masculine and acts as an agent of divine action or communication and is often associated with the angel Gabriel rather than, as in Christianity, part of the trinity.
What is the Holy Spirit? In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit appears to take many different forms – water, the living water; anointing – to bless with oil; fire – transforming energy descending like ‘tongues of fire’; cloud and light – a type of overshadowing; the dove – descending spirit; and wind – ‘a sound from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind’. The Holy Spirit often brought forth ‘gifts’ within the individual it touched, gifts of prophecy, healing, discernment of spirits, exorcism, speaking in tongues...and is also described as the bringer of other positive qualities: "...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
International Women’s Day was just celebrated recently, with ceremonies all over the world, reminding women of their special gifts and how much we still have to do to ensure that all our Sisters all over the world are recognized for their innate and true worth. As we watched the uprisings in the Middle Ease we saw many young Muslim women marching along with their Brothers, a sight unseen for a long time. It will be interesting to see how events unfold, and whether the return of the feminine will hold ‘true’.
